Indigenous Just Transition
Working in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples for climate justice
Last Chance Alliance’s Platform in Support of an Indigenous Just Transition affirms our commitment to the rights, sovereignty, and leadership of Indigenous Peoples. Our fight for climate justice is inseparable from Indigenous justice — and our movement must reflect that truth in action.
Rooted in the principles of responsibility and relationship, sovereignty, and transformation for action, this affirmation draws guidance from the Indigenous Environmental Network and was created in partnership with the Sacred Places Institute for Indigenous Peoples, both members of Last Chance Alliance. Their leadership and wisdom continue to shape how we organize, advocate, and imagine a just future for California and beyond.

Our Commitments
We ground our work in the understanding that Indigenous Peoples are the original stewards and caretakers of our planet — living in right relationship with the lands and waters that sustain all life.
In solidarity, we:
- Acknowledge the ongoing impacts of colonization and the fossil fuel industry’s role in the desecration of Indigenous lands.
- Build relationships with Indigenous Peoples and Tribal Nations in the places where we live and organize.
- Create intentional space for collaboration between Indigenous leaders and allied climate, labor, and public health organizations.
- Invest in the environmental liberation and self-determination of Indigenous communities most impacted by fossil fuel infrastructure.
- Reject tokenization and uplift the sovereignty of Indigenous Nations throughout what is now known as California.
- Work together to call on our leaders to enact policies that protect the climate while honoring Indigenous rights and governance.
- Commit to continued education of our member organizations as we seek to decolonize our language, history, and learning.

Our Shared Purpose
A true Just Transition must be informed by Indigenous knowledge and science— one that confronts colonial systems of extraction and centers Indigenous sovereignty, knowledge, and leadership.
Last Chance Alliance commits to solidarity with Indigenous Peoples, holding ourselves accountable to these values, and organizing for a future rooted in justice, reciprocity, and respect for the sacred lands and waters we all depend on.
